Maaga pa lang, nagbukas ako ng Facebook this morning, and saw a post by Sen. The film as I understand, garnered wide acclaim and won several awards including the FPJ Memorial award.

The post read:

If thousands of our own fellow citizens, human beings like you and me have been killed in less than half a year and yet the vast majority of our people see little or nothing wrong with it, why then should a dog’s life matter?

P.S. In 2012, I sponsored and defended the bill amending the Animal Welfare Act which increased the penalties for acts of cruelty committed against animals. It became law in 2013.

Dahil wala ako sa loop about the entries sa Metro Manila Film Fest, I had to investigate what “ORO” was about.  Apparently, it is a film that included a scene of a dog being slaughtered.  Although it was guaranteed by the producers of the film that no animal was harmed during filiming (they said they used goat meat and , the scene had troubled many that PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society) and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have now joined to request investigation regarding the scene to see if the producers violated the law.

However, I am still not clear whether the scene was real or not because upon reading several news outlets, I get the impression that the slaughter was real. Pet-Asia and other whistleblowers state that the scene was real! If so, I condemn the film makers of “ORO” for allowing such scene to be captured and hurt an animal in the process.
